A 6FT 4in policeman who thumped another officer during a rugby match claimed “he ran on to my fist”, a court heard yesterday.
PC Brett O’Hagan, 31, allegedly broke Det Con Gareth Bishop’s nose, gashed his face and gave him a black eye.
The colleagues clashed while on opposing teams in a local league game.
O’Hagan told jurors: “I saw Gareth Bishop running full-pelt at me. He is four stones heavier than me. I lashed out with a straight-arm punch and he ran on to my fist.”
But prosecutor Michael Hammond claimed the South Wales Police constable punched then kicked Mr Bishop in the face.
The victim, 38, needed stitches and his nose reset.
Newport crown court heard blood on O’Hagan’s boots matched Mr Bishop’s DNA.
O’Hagan, of Porth, Rhondda, denied wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, claiming self-defence. The trial continues.
