Neil Patrick Harris is bringing his sweet geek pipes to Adventure Time. Monday night’s episode of the surreal toon, “Adventure Time With Fionna and Cake,” excellently transforms Pendleton Ward’s subversively saccharine land of Ooo into a gender-swapped parallel universe.
Dude adventurer Finn turns into Fionna, his magically elastic canine companion Jake transforms into a cat named Cake, and resident royalty Princess Bubblegum becomes Fionna’s serenading sweetheart, Prince Gumball, played by Harris.
Prince Gumball stays pink, as you can tell from the patently awesome preview clip above, and he loves to watch action babe Fionna’s earnest swordplay. “Your fist has touched my heart,” he croons appreciatively, as she hacks apart frowning eyeballs rushing past their romantic sunset.
The Adventure Time turn isn’t as rousing the performance Harris gave in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog or the late, great Batman: The Brave and the Bold’s brilliant musical episode, “Mayhem of the Music Meister.” But it is another shining example of NPH’s pop-cultural reach, which has grown quite long indeed.
