Hours after a Phillies batter won a game as a pitcher, Cliff Lee's offense lifted Philadelphia to another victory. It was a bizarre two days and 28 innings.
Lee drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and a single, and worked eight effective innings, leading the host Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday afternoon.
Lee helped himself in the series finale following Wednesday's 19-inning marathon that ended at 1:19 a.m., after 6 hours, 11 minutes and 600 total pitches. Infielder Wilson Valdez got the win after pitching the top of the 19th.
Lee left that game in the fourth inning. He wanted to get plenty of sleep before pitching the series finale. But like so many other people transfixed by the marathon, he could not turn off his television in the wee hours. "I turned it off and planned on going to sleep, and I couldn't help myself. I had to turn it back on," Lee said.
Cubs: Carlos Zambrano was another hitting pitcher, as he went 3 for 3 and drove in a run as well as pitching six strong innings to help the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 9-3 at Wrigley Field.
  • The Cubs also traded with Atlanta for right-hander Rodrigo Lopez, 36, in a deal for Class-A left-hander Ryan Buchter, 24. Lopez, 75-82 in nine seasons in the majors, was 6-1 with a 2.59 ERA in nine games for Triple-A Gwinnett.

  • their fans said one final goodbye to Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew, 74, who died last week after a bout with esophageal cancer. Thousands of fans, dozens of former teammates and about 45 of Killebrew's family members attended a memorial service held at Target Field. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton declared Thursday as Harmon Killebrew Day. Rockies: A 27-year-old man who fell about 20 feet and struck his head on concrete Tuesday during a Colorado Rockies game has been declared dead, authorities said.
Braves: DUI and reckless driving charges were dismissed against pitcher Derek Lowe for lack of evidence, as a police video following the April 28 arrest reportedly showed Lowe "did remarkably well" in his field sobriety tests after declining a breath test.
