YORK COUNTY --
A man accused of giving Lake Wylie middle school students prescription drugs to sell was arrested Wednesday by York County deputies.
Christopher Marc Veurink, 38, of Clover is charged with distribution of Klonopin to a person under 18, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, distribution of Klonopin and conspiracy to distribute Klonopin, which is an anti-seizure drug also used to relieve panic attacks.
According to a York County Sheriff's Office release, a school resource officer at Oakridge Middle School was told three students were acting strangely and were "sleepy and unsteady on their feet." An investigation revealed that a 14-year-old student had been given Klonopin pills to sell to classmates.
The student said Veurink sold him the pills, according to the release. An investigation determined that student also stole money from a teacher. The money was recovered and returned to the teacher.
That student was taken into custody and will be petitioned in family court with distribution of controlled substance, conspiracy to distribute Klonopin and petty larceny, according to the release.
At least four middle school students bought the Klonopin, two pills of which were recovered from students, the report states. Parents of the students sought medical attention for their children.
All of the students are fine, said Oakridge Middle School Principal Will Largen on Thursday.
Largen said the investigation was very much a team effort.
"I commend our resource officer, Wayne Richardson," he said. "Our biggest concern was making sure our students were safe, but also we wanted to find the source of where all this paraphernalia came from."
Largen said the students were very helpful with information, which he then gave to law enforcement.
A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division background check on Veurink did not turn up any previous arrests.
