They also usually have a bit different facial characteristics with small pointed teeth, little puffiness under the eyes and an upturned nose as compared to the normal children. Whatever they may look like, one is likely to build friendship with them due to their easy nature.
As a general rule, children tend to show more positive attitude towards people belonging to their own race but the victims of Williams’ syndrome are quite different to them as they have no biasness toward any race whatsoever. The fact was uncovered in a recent research in which two pictures were shown to the sample population that included both normal and syndrome affected children. In one picture there was a white and black in another.
When they were asked which was the “bad-one”, the normal children tend to choose the one with someone not of their ethnicity while children having the syndrome were quite indifferent to both of them. Same is the case with Williams’ adults as they are also very friendly and empathetic. It is difficult for them to see someone in pain and if they do happen to be in such a situation they’ll be the first ones to offer help.
With such an empathetic attitude there lies a potential threat for them as they cannot properly judge the bad intentions of others. Similarly they also cannot predict if a situation is getting dangerous. That makes them dependent on some kind of protection.
If we look at the syndrome from a biological perspective, it happens due to absence of nearly 25 genes in the 7th chromosome due to random deletion while the production process of the sperms/egg cells is going on. It is still not well-known that why and how the absence of these specific genes can cause such hyper-social and empathetic behavior.
