Chelsea Handler gets political

Comedienne Chelsea Handler loves vodka, writes bestsellers, dates high-profile men, is the reigning queen of late-night comedy and is always team Jen over Angelina. In the September issue of glossy mag Capitol File, she also reveals a passion for politics and a fondness for Washington.

Of course, us White House Correspondents’ Dinner watchers knew that already. Handler has attended the last two, this year with current beau Andre Balazs on her arm.

Handler has had three books on the New York Times bestseller list at the same time and her book “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” is being turned into a TV show by NBC. She’s certainly not new on the scene, but Capitol File sees her as more “now” than “new.”

“She’s so relevant right now. Between her shows and her books and her never-ending commentary on all things popular culture and politics, she’s just incredibly interesting. Her fan base is extensive and she has an uncensored point of view – so refreshing in these days of talking points and scripted answers. Also, we loved that she is considering a new talk show platform that would likely include happenings and interviews with political figures and Beltway luminaries, which made her a great fit for Capitol File,” Kate Bennett, the magazine’s editor in chief, told POLITICO.
Handler told Capitol File that she is itching to do something more political: "I just want something more well-rounded…Just a little bit more serious, still have the tone of who I am, but be able to talk about other topics and have more responsibility about what I'm talking about rather than just talking about celebrity."

As for politicians and the media types who grill politicians, she said she likes Katie Couric, Brian Williams, Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough. She also said “Sarah Palin is a little bit more frightening than Michele Bachmann." Her explanation? "Well, she's dumber."
She won’t be counting on the Bachmann and Palin camps to push her to Washington, but “Piers Morgan Tonight” executive producer Jonathan Wald is happy to give her a little encouragement. He told Cap File, “Please, Chelsea, go to Washington…A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.”
