Aztec track takes second at state

ALBUQUERQUE — The 2011 track season came to a close on Saturday at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and the Four Corners top team finisher was the young Aztec Lady Tigers team who took second in 4A.
The Lady Tigers finished as runner up with 53 points behind Los Alamos (74) and ahead of Albuquerque (47) and Kirtland Central in fourth with 45 points.
On the boys side, Kirtland, Piedra Vista and Aztec finished in fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
Area athletes claimed six state titles over the two day meet.
Piedra Vista's Nick Waterhouse won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes for the Panthers.
The only other area male to win a state title was Farmington High's Aaron Gomez in the 300 meter hurdles. District 1-4A runners swept the medal stand in that race with Kirtland Central's Ryder Hathaway finishing second and Bloomfield's Austin Johnson finishing third. Farmington's Dallin Payne placed fifth in the race and Erik Miller of Bloomfield placed sixth.
Aztec's Megan Gerry won two state titles at the meet. She took the triple jump title with a distance of 35-06.50 and was part of the blue ribbon 4x200 relay team that also included Kendra Mitchell, Shelby Gabeheart and Erin Porter.
The 4x100 relay was also claimed by a District 1-4A foursome. Kirtland's Maddi Tanner, Kourtini Ashcroft, Shantel Foutz and Kallie Farnsworth won the race. Foutz also took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles. Tanner took second in the
